General Grub: where to eat before kickoff against Franklin

Thursday. It’s the beginning of every football week with high school, college, and pro games taking place. This week will be Grant’s final home game at the Grant Bowl as the lone remaining home game against Roosevelt will be played at Lincoln. Kickoff being at 4 P.M. will again make it challenging to find a place to eat and be on time for the beginning of the game. However, we’ve picked a couple of places close to the Bowl to grab a bite before kickoff for you so let’s get straight to checking them out.

Pine State Biscuits

A popular place on Alberta Street, Pine State serves up some of the best Southern baked goods and breakfast sandwiches in Portland. The Reggie Deluxe is a must-try for anyone looking for a filling sandwich. Open late on weekends, it’s a great option both before and after the game.

Info:

Hours: 7 A.M. – 11:00 P.M. on Fridays

Location: 2204 NE Alberta Street

Pieology Pizzeria

New to the Grant Park neighborhood, Pieology is about as close as you can get to Subway when it comes to pizza. Built right in front of you with seemingly endless options, you won’t be disappointed with your decision to visit this shop.

General Grub: where to eat before kickoff against Cleveland

Homecoming weekend has begun. Today’s assembly marked the beginning the festivities and with this being the first true home game for the Generals, the atmosphere seems as charged as it’s been all season. A 4:00 P.M. kickoff can be a challenge with Portland traffic, so we’re profiling two places close to Grant to grab a bite to eat before the game.

Little Big Burger

Located about 10 minutes from the Grant Bowl, this place is notorious for their truffle fries. Fast, quality food that will fill you up leaves little to be desired from this establishment. The restaurant features a simple menu as you see from the picture, but a wide selection of toppings and cheeses make a variety of options available.  Your biggest trouble will be finding parking on the busy streets during the mid-afternoon.

The Blind Onion

A favorite lunch spot for many Grant students, this small pizza shop serves it up both by the slice and in a whole pie depending on your preference. Plenty of seating makes this place a popular spot, but if you call ahead you can have your order ready when you arrive and be enjoying pizza in the bowl in no time.

Meet a General: Aaron Thompson

Position: Guard

Year: Senior

Favorite place to eat: Subway

Favorite musician: Lzzy Hale

Favorite book: American Sniper

Favorite memory from last season: getting my first varsity playing time against Benson

Reason you started playing football: in middle school I was overweight and suffering from depression and thought football would be a great activity for both of those.

Favorite TV show: Daredevil

Favorite movie: The Lord of the Rings

iPhone or Android: Android

Class you most look forward to: Computer Programming

PlayStation, Xbox, or Wii: Xbox

Social media of choice: Facebook

Post-graduation aspirations: I’d like to play college football and work towards a degree in computer science.

Favorite Coach Heath quote: “I don’t care how many guys we have right now, give me 11 and we can go to battle with anyone.”

That’s all for this morning everyone. Make sure to be at Grant by 4:00 P.M. for kickoff against Cleveland.

Go Generals!

General Grub: where to eat before kickoff against Madison

All in. This week there’s a different feeling at the Grant Bowl with Madison on the schedule. The team will say that this is just another game and they’re focused on getting better each week, there’s a certain sense of bitterness when the subject of this week’s opponent is mentioned. While both teams are winless coming into this week, this clash has been anticipated all summer and will live up to the billing come Friday night.

The PIL is entering league play, meaning we’re getting into the thick of the high school season. Personally that means I prematurely celebrate Halloween for the next six weeks while eating unhealthy amounts of candy and binge watch football. For the Generals, it means a seven week sprint towards a league title and the state playoffs. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, however, let’s take a look at a couple of great places to grab a bite to eat before the 7:30 kickoff at Madison.

Stanich’s

Easily accessible if you’re in a rush before the game, Stanich’s has been a staple of fast, quality food since they first opened in 1949.  Some of the best burgers in town, this place provides a great atmosphere both before and after the games as they stay open late on the weekends.

Info:

Menu

Hours: 11 AM – 11 PM on Friday

Killer Burger:

Ever-popular in Portland, Killer Burger serves up some of the most unique burgers in the country (there first item on the menu is their peanut butter, pickle, bacon burger) that makes it stand out in a culturally rich city when it comes to food. Getting to this place after the game will be next to impossible as the doors are closed at 10 PM.

Post-graduation aspirations: That college grind.

That’s all for tonight everyone, tune in tomorrow for more coverage. As always: Go Generals!

General Grub: where to eat before kickoff against Sherwood

Fall is fast approaching. The leaves are starting to change colors, Halloween accessories are prematurely up in stores, and high school football is in full swing around the state. Several matchups catch our eye this week with Grant’s game against Sherwood being one that is not only intriguing due to our obvious interest, but will also provide a huge measuring stick for the PIL against a top-10 team. This Friday will reveal just how big the gap is between the PIL and the state’s elite. If  the young and hungry Generals can take on the level of competition and physicality they’ll see Friday night it will do wonders for turning around the stigma that’s attached to PIL football currently.

Sherwood is one of the best places in the state to take in a Friday night of high school football.  A cathedral on the scale of high school stadiums, the Bowmen pack this place as the town shuts down for home games. With a great selection of food at the stadium including a BBQ serving burgers and hot dogs all game long, this week we encourage you to enjoy the food at the game because it really is some of the best in Sherwood.  Now that we’ve taken care of food for the week, let’s get to know junior Rees Rosene beyond what we see on the field each Friday.

Meet a General: Rees Rosene

Position: Center

Year: Junior

Favorite place to eat: Taste Tickler

Favorite musician: Kendrick Lamar

Favorite book:  To Kill a Mockingbird

What sparked your interest in football: I really didn’t like my soccer coach, and I’d always wanted to try the sport but my parents wouldn’t let me until the seventh grade.

Favorite memory from last season: either walking onto the field at Tigard for my first varsity game, or beating Roosevelt for the PIL title.

Favorite TV show: the league

Favorite movie: The Matrix

iPhone or Android: iPhone

Class you most look forward to: AP Chem

PlayStation, Xbox, or Wii: Xbox

Post-graduation aspirations: I’d like to be a materials engineer or a chemist.

Favorite Coach Heath quote: “It’s not that hard, just read the guards.”

That’s all for right now, tune in later tonight for our Pick ‘Em Challenge for week 2.

Go Generals!

General Grub: Where to eat before kickoff against Lakeridge

Welcome back to another season of Generals football everyone! As we did last year, we’re happy to bring you info on the surrounding area of wherever Grant plays each week. We’re in full swing as there are just three short days until we get to see exactly what this team is made of when they take on the Lakeridge Pacers.

Playing at Lincoln can be both a blessing and a burden. Ideally the city would put up lights and turn Grant Park into a stadium, but as of now if we want to play a night game it means traveling to the home of our west side rivals. The surrounding cultural scene of the downtown Portland provides plenty of places to grab a bite to eat or entertain the family before headed to the game for a 7:30 kickoff.

This week we’ve got two places we think are great before coming to check out the Generals for the first time this season.

Hot Lips Pizza:

Located just down Morrison from Lincoln’s stadium this is a favorite among the Portland Timbers faithful, and being located just across the street from Providence Park keeps this place busy. Since there’s no games being played at Providence this Friday, Hot Lips is the perfect place to grab a cheap dinner and is within walking distance of the game. Served either by the slice or “full-pie,” there are several options available.

Menu: HotLips Menu

Hours: 11:00 A.M. – 10:00 P.M.

Location: SW 18th & Morrison
Brunch Box:

Texas toast burgers is all the information you really need, but there’s plenty of options at this unique burger joint. Custom built burgers with toppings ranging from jalapeƱos to peanut butter and everything between make this place a popular after work scene. The max line makes this place easily accessible being less than 10 minutes from the stadium.

Menu: Brunch Box Menu

Hours: 8:00 A.M. – 10:00 P.M.

Location: 620 SW 9th Avenue

That’s it for this week’s edition of General Grub. Remember to download Periscope and follow @grant_fb for live coverage of the team. Following today’s practice we will be talking with senior Malique Griffin about this week’s game.

Go Generals!

The Local Bite: Cleveland Week

Wow, what a week last week! The Generals got the win in convincing style, and there was multiple huge upsets among the college ranks.

This week your Generals will be traveling over to 26th Ave. to take on the Cleveland Warriors. Personally, I’m excited for this game because Cleveland’s stadium is one of my favorites in the PIL. The addition of turf will only improve the ambiance for this week. Couple that with the amazing array of food options in Southeast Portland, and you’ve got the recipe for a great beginning of a long weekend.

A 7 o’clock kickoff means there will be plenty of time for you and your friends or family to grab some grub before the game. Remember though, that this game is on Thursday night since Friday is a school in-service day. This week we’ve got three great restaurants for you to check out, all within ten minutes of the stadium.

Shut Up & Eat Sandwich Shop:

IMG_2706.JPG
If you’re looking a a great sub, there aren’t many better options than Shut Up & Eat. Reasonably priced sandwiches and some amazing side dishes (macaroni salad, butternut squash, etc.) make this an excellent option for anyone. Make sure to check this establishment out before kickoff as they close at 8:00 PM on Thursdays.
Menu:

Hours:
9:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Location:
3848 SE Glisan Street

Little Big Burger:
Sliders, fries, sodas, and floats, what more could you ask for in quick and delicious food? Several different options for your burger (lettuce wrap, goat cheese, and a secret menu) and quick service make this place a popular attraction to many in the area. Out of the three restaurants, this place offers the most flexibility in terms of time as it is open late each night.

Tennessee Red’s:
If BBQ is your meal of choice, you have to check this place out. Several different specials for each day of the week, and a great atmosphere for both family and friends. Make sure to check this place out after the game to watch highlights of the day’s sports action on their big screen TVs.

The Local Bite: Lincoln Week

Well it’s that time of year again Grant nation. It’s time to play the boys from Lincoln. While I am new to the Grant vs Lincoln rivalry, I have my own distain for the Cardinals, which has me a little more amped up than normal.

From what I have heard over the last couple of days, this is a rivalry with no love lost between the teams. It should make for an amazing game as the Cards visit the Grant Bowl for the first time ever.

Speaking of the Grant Bowl, what an amazing place to watch a football game. The neighborhood setting, the enclosed field, and the surrounding attractions make it a special place to watch a football game. If you can look beyond the early start times and see it for what it is; the kick-off for varsity high school football each weekend in Oregon, then seeing a game here can be truly special.

Being that this is an early evening start (4:00 PM), getting a meal before the game will be challenging, but the proximity of the stadium to the Hollywood District downtown means you can get delicious food and still be at the game in time to see all of the action.

This week we’re bringing you three of our favorite options that will leave you satisfied, but also wanting to plan a return trip before the next home game.

The Blind Onion Pizza & Pub:

IMG_2445.PNG

Located less than a block from the Bowl, this small pizza shop makes fresh hand-crafted pizzas each day, and offers 3 different sizes depending on your group size. The fast service enables patrons to take their order to go, which is beneficial for those who are in a hurry to catch the game. For those who are more of the night owl type, this is still a viable option as it is open until 11:00 PM each Friday and Saturday and has a bar with a flatscreen tv where you can watch highlights from around the state each Friday night.
Menu:
Blind Onion Menu
Hours:
11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Location:
3345 NE Broadway Street

Atomic Pizza:

Another pizza joint, and further from the stadium, but some of the best pizza in town to go along with the option of getting a sandwich or dessert. The name isn’t a play on words, as the pizza can be on the spicy side, so be warned. A popular hang out for players after games, it’s best if you try to get your slice before or on the way to the game.
Hours:
11:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Location:
4144 NE Sandy Boulevard

Killer Burger:
Just as you might think when reading the name of the restaurant, these burgers are to die for. The atmosphere is great with excellent service to match. Make sure that you look thoroughly at the menu to avoid allergic reactions as there are some unique ingredients on each burger. Located within 10 minutes of the Grant Bowl, this is an excellent spot to get a great bite to eat before the game.
Hours:
11:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Location:
4644 NE Sandy Boulevard

That’s it for this week’s segment of “The Local Bite,” make sure to check back each week for great places to eat near the Generals next game. As always: GO GENERALS!

The Local Bite: Wilson Week

Like any other football fanatic, I love taking in the atmosphere of a weekend of pigskin and all it has to offer, especially on a Friday night.

High school football offers the unique ability to take in several different settings: from the busy downtown hustle, to the gradual shutdown of an entire small town on Friday afternoon, to the neighborhood school, it is quite the privilege to experience so many impressive venues.

With Portland having a large social and cultural impact on the state of Oregon, it makes for quite the experience for anyone looking to have an enjoyable weekend full of high school football.

One of my favorite things about Portland is all of the amazing food you can find around the city for cheap.

So, each Monday, I will be writing about the local food options that are available and close to wherever the Generals will be playing that week. Each restaurant will have its address, webpage, and contact info included so that you can find the best place to grab a bite before the Generals kick-off!

This week Grant is traveling to Wilson, which sits in the middle of upscale neighborhoods in the West Hills of Portland. Tucked right beside the school is tons of cheap, quality dining for the die hard Oregon high school football fan. We’ve selected four spots that we think are great food options whether you are catching the game by yourself, with friends, or with the whole family.

Taco City @ Hillsdale Food Park:
Literally across the street from Wilson’s football stadium, a quick bite to eat doesn’t get more convenient than this as Taco City serves up a wide variety of delicious Mexican food that you can pick up and eat on your walk to your seats. Make sure you time your visit wisely, as this place shuts down at 7:00 on the dot during the fall because the employees want to get to the Wilson game each week. Known for their large serving sizes, you won’t be disappointed in spending your money here.
Menu:

Hours:
11:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 5:00 – 7:00 PM
Location:
6238 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, Oregon 97239

Humdinger Drive-In:
A local burger joint that has been owned by the same couple since it opened in the 80’s, this has been a popular hang out for both Wilson students and local residents because of its throwback type of style. Limited seating indoors can make the wait for food a bit longer than other places, but the quality more than makes up for lost time. Some of the best burgers and fries that most don’t know about, and over 30 flavors of milkshakes, none of which can be constituted as a bad decision.

10:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location:
8250 SW Barbur Blvd, Portland, OR 97219

Frack Burger:

IMG_2353.JPG
Located just up the street from Humdinger Drive-In, Frack Burger is a fast growing burger shop that serves some of the best burgers and fries in town. This one is a favorite of mine because of the amazing appetizers: chili cheese fries, beer-battered onion rings, and home-made beef and bean chili are just some of the options this place offers. The best part of this dining choice is you could go either before or after the game as they are open until 11 PM each night of the week. This might be a better option than the Humdinger if you are eating with a group as there is plenty of seating available.
Menu:

Noodles Restaurant:

IMG_2354.JPG
A small Italian, family style restaurant, this gem is the farthest drive from the game (still only 10 minutes away), but has the best food on this list. While plenty of indoor and outdoor seating is available, it does get busy as this is a popular place for families to eat with Wilson, Jesuit, and Beaverton all being relatively close to the restaurant. As you can imagine with an Italian restaurant, some of the food can be a bit steeper in price, but it is worth the extra couple bucks for the type of food you are getting.

That’s it for this week’s version of The Local Bite. If you know of any other great places to eat near the game this week, make sure to leave a comment letting us know! See you Friday Generals.
